Rod Robinson tells Castanet he heard what sounded like multiple loud bangs, what he thought was gun shots, from his home on Ellis St.
Another Castanet reader said, "I would like to know from the 'powers that be' why fireworks are allowed to be going off at a. This happened last night, a beautiful spectacle, but the party along with it, and huge explosions was not appreciated at that hour. Saturday, May 15,frontline Kelowna RCMP officers were on routine foot patrol when they encountered man with what appeared okanagan be a gun in his possession. After a discussion with the officers, the man agreed to consent to allow police to seize and destroy what turned out to be an airsoft rifle. The upper photo is a real carbine rifle, while the bottom photo was taken of the airsoft rifle seized from the man club the weekend.

The city, she said, has been the subject of some "major violent crime," over the first three months ofincluding the brazen daylight shooting of Kyle Gianis outside Global Fitness. Earlier this spring, members of the province's gang enforcement team spent six days in Kelowna, learning about local crime hot spots, and up-to-date intelligence to help with enforcement activities while in the region.
Triance says Insp. Beth McAndie, who recently came to the detachment from Surrey, has implemented the "inadmissible patrons" program. That work allows us to focus on those who are committing the most violent crime in our communities. A similar initiative banning gang colours from local pubs, clubs, bars and other establishments was tried a decade ago in the city.
Meantime, Triance says the detachment is ready for the expected influx of visitors to the Central Okanagan this summer.
Patrols will be stepped up in public spaces, including parks, rail trails and downtown areas where visitors are expected to frequent. But the detachment with a higher crime rate and more cases per officer than comparable-sized communities in the province will be stretched thin. Scott Podmoroff was passed over for a promotion that carried the rank of Sergeant, leading him to file a grievance in Decemberalleging the successful candidate was not the right fit and he was more qualified.
In the midst of the grievance process, Cpl. Podmoroff learned that the successful candidate received help drafting their application from two more senior Mounties, which is against RCMP policy. One of the senior officers who provided the assistance to the successful candidate was later involved in the selection process for the promotion.
Brent Mundle, the officer primarily responsible gentlemens the promotion process in this case, asked Staff Sgt. Jordan to help him select and rank the candidates. Jordan had ly provided feedback to two of the candidates in the running. The detachment at the time was being run by Supt. Nick Romanchuk. Mundle took over command of the detachment in before leaving the post and retiring earlier this year.
The RCMP grievance process has two levels. Court sirens state Staff Sgt. McVeigh, however, stopped short of granting Podmoroff's request for a backdated promotion and removal of the successful candidate. Kelowna may have got a sneak peek at what summer might look like this past weekend, and it was a okanagan of reality that didn't sit too well with Mayor Colin Basran. With the unofficial kickoff to summer just four days away, Basran urged people to help to get things back open again by "doing the right things.
Brad Sieben also weighed in, saying with the temperatures club the weekend, it looked a lot like summer. With everyone over 18 now eligible to register for the vaccination, Sieben urged those who have not done so, or are sitting on the fence, the register.
With the extremely dry weather the Okanagan has seen over the last few weeks, most of the Kamloops Fire Centre is now in a moderate to high fire danger rating. Although rain is in the forecast this week, fire information officer Kayla Fraser says it won't alter the rating. According to Environment Canada, the driest parts of the region have been in the Central and North Okanagan. So we are two months back-to-back extremely dry," says Environment Canada's Doug Lundquist.
Lundquist says only 10 millimetres of rain has fallen in the last two months in Kelowna and only one millimetre of rain has hit in May. While that is far drier than normal, spring typically doesn't bring much rain to the Okanagan until about the middle of May. If we don't have that rain we are in trouble — it's going to be a problem for the fire weather forecasters. What that means is that the deeper fuels are drying out earlier than usual and wildfires that occur in deeper fuels typically are more difficult to control and extinguish. BC Wildfire is reminding the gentlemens that even though it is still very early into fire season it is still important to be cautious and do what you can to prevent a human-caused wildfire.
